How to wash your knitwear?

Tips for washing and caring for wool garments. Here is a small step-by-step guide on how to wash knitwear and wool garments. Knitwear can be washed/rinsed before use to even out the stitch pattern, or in case of stains. Wool has natural properties that make it resistant to odors and protect against dirt and grime. We recommend, as far as possible, hanging them outside to air instead of washing them (preferably overnight in cold, dry air). Stains can also be removed without washing the entire garment. If the garment must be washed, we recommend hand washing.

Look at the label on our yarn qualities to see how garments should be washed. Also see more info under each yarn / yarn color on our page.

    HAND WASH

    1. Fill the tub/sink with lukewarm water.
Use cold to lukewarm water (max. 30°C). Feel free to test with your hand – it should feel pleasantly cool.

    2. Add wool detergent and stir well.
Stir the water well so that the detergent dissolves completely before adding the garment.

    3. Place the garment in and wash gently.
Gently immerse the garment in the water (avoid rubbing, scrubbing or twisting it)
Gently move the garment up and down in the water to help the detergent penetrate, but be very careful not to "process" the wool fibers too much.
Leave it in the water for about 3-5 minutes – that's enough time for the detergent to do its job without the garment being subjected to unnecessary wear and tear.

    4. Squeeze out the water gently
Do not wring the garment. Gently squeeze out the water. Lay it flat in a towel and roll it up to squeeze out moisture.

    5. Shape and dry flat
Dry the garment flat. Gently stretch it back into shape.

If the garment is heavy and wet, it may expand – therefore, short washing time og flat wipe important. The looser a garment is knitted, the faster it will become large in the wash. Some people have success with spinning in the machine at 800 revolutions. Here you have to try your hand and know your machine well. Maybe test with a small "sample" of the same yarn quality?

  • Stain removal

    STAIN REMOVAL ON KNITTED GARMENTS

    1. Treat the stain quickly: Dampen the area with cold water and pat gently with a clean, damp cloth. Do not rub – this can damage the fibers.

    2. Use a suitable stain remover: Apply a mild wool-friendly soap or stain remover directly to the stain. Leave it to work for a few minutes.

    3. Rinse and wash gently: Rinse gently in cold water, then wash the garment by hand or on a wool cycle in the machine. Follow the washing instructions carefully.

    MACHINE WASH

We always recommend hand washing our wool yarns. However, most of our yarn qualities can be washed in the machine on a wool program. All machines are different and treat wool differently. Washing wool in the machine is at your own risk. We recommend testing how the machine treats the yarn – knit a test piece that you wash first. Not all machines are equally gentle, so be careful.

Our cotton yarn can be washed in the machine, often at 40 degrees and with regular washing. However, test with your machine first.

1.Use mild wool soap: Choose a soap that is specially formulated for wool and delicate fabrics.

2.Wash on wool program: Use the machine's wool program – max 30 °C.

3.Gentle spinning: Select a maximum of 800 revolutions to avoid shrinkage or wear.

    4. Dry flat: Gently stretch the garment back into shape and let it dry flat.

    MACHINE WASH TIPS
Many newer washing machines have water-saving features and adjust the amount of water according to the weight of the laundry. Since wool is light, the machine may use too little water, which means that the soap is not rinsed out well enough. This can damage the wool garments. To avoid this, we recommend wetting the wool garments before washing if you have a machine with water-saving features. Place the garments in water in the sink or a bucket, or run a short wool program without soap, preferably with cold water. When the garments are wet and slightly heavier, the machine will take in enough water for effective rinsing. Some machines also allow you to adjust the amount of water manually.
After washing, wool should be gently stretched back into shape to maintain the fit. Dry flat.
